Can the two-parameter recursive digital filter baseflow separation method really be calibrated by the conductivity mass balance method?

Abstract. The two-parameter recursive digital filter method (Eckhardt) and the conductivity mass balance (CMB) are two widely used baseflow separation methods favored by hydrologists. Some divergences in application of these have emerged recent years. scholars believe that deviation results is due to uncertainty parameters Eckhardt should be corrected reference CMB method. However, other attribute fact they contain different transient water components. This study aimed resolve this disagreement analyzing effectiveness for correcting through 26 basins United States comparison biases between generated daily series. showed approach calibrating against provides a “false” calibration total offsetting inherent sequences methods. sequence usually includes slow interflow bank storage return flow, whereas high-conductivity flushed from swamps depressions rainfall, but not low-conductivity flow. difference obvious peak misalignment periodic obtained methods, thereby preventing calibration. multi-component streamflow can achieved comparison. Future research recognize deviations identify reasons differences, explore hydrological information contained therein.
